Google has revealed the reason behind the favicon change. The big reason is rebranding. Google has releasing their mobile phone and they need to support their mobile phone with a favicon that will look nice on mobile device.
Google also open a contest for creating their new faveicon. If have confident go submit it, your icon will be viewed by millions of people everyday.
